AC-DC converters are used in many different applications, from solar and wind power systems, to medical and communications equipment, lighting and power electronics, and even military applications. The MAP40-3100 AC-DC converter is a high efficiency, medium power, switched-mode power supply designed to meet the needs of industrial process control, medical, professional audio, military, and aerospace applications requiring medium power levels. It operates over a wide input voltage range of 90-205 VAC, has a high efficiency of over 86%, and is built with isolated half-bridge PFC (Power Factor Correction) with 600 V /50 A MOSFETs. This AC-DC converter is easily configurable with voltage output options from 18 to 48 VDC.
At the heart of every AC to DC converter is the rectifier. A rectifier is an electrical component that changes alternating current (AC) to unidirectional current (DC). Rectifiers are used in wide variety of products to provide DC power from an AC source. In the MAP40-3100, the rectifier is a diode bridge, which converts AC power into DC by only allowing the positive voltage to flow through. Once the AC is converted into DC, other components can be added to customize the output voltage. In the case of the MAP40-3100, this is accomplished using a switch mode power supply and the resultant ripple is typically lower than 1%.
After the rectifier, the MAP40-3100 includes a PFC stage that provides a constant voltage input. The PFC stage is a converter that keeps the ratio of real power to apparent power in the input line, the power factor, as close to 1 as possible. Therefore, the PFC stage compensates for reactive power on the input line, ensuring efficiency and reducing unwanted interference. The PFC stage also reduces the start-up current surge, allowing for a much faster electrical protection response, and longer component life.
Finally, the MAP40-3100 has an isolated output step-down transformer which reduces the voltage and provides good isolation from the input line. The output regulator provides tight voltage regulation, high efficiency, and has protection features such as over voltage, under voltage, over currents, and short circuit protection. All of these features ensure that the MAP40-3100 will perform its intended use with reliability and safety.
