TVS (Transient Voltage Suppression) diodes provide protection against electrical overstresses on electronic circuits. The MAP6KE11A is an ultra-fast, single-diode, unidirectional TVS diode designed for applications such as line protection, load switching, load sensing, and overvoltage protection. The MAP6KE11A is a low-capacitance, high-performance TVS diode with a breakdown voltage of 11V. It offers a wide range of current ratings from 500 watts peak power dissipation, up to 5A max. reverse leak current. Its internal design is optimized for ultra-fast response to transients and it is rated to protect against electrostatic discharges (ESD) of up to 16kV Human Body Model (HBM), and 8kV Machine Model (MM).

The MAP6KE11A is available in a SMA-DO-214AC package that is compatible with standard through-hole printed circuit assembly (PCA) processes. It also features a low profile to reduce board space requirements. The diode is leak-proof and capable of operating in temperatures from -55 to +125°C without any external thermal impediment.

The working principle of MAP6KE11A is simple but reliable. In normal operation, the applied voltage across the anode and cathode terminals is below the breakdown voltage. As soon as a transient condition occurs, the applied voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage and the diode conducts, creating a low impedance path for the current to flow from the anode to the cathode. This shunts the applied transient voltage away from the protected load and dissipates it as heat. The diode then quickly returns to its low voltage, non-conductive state and does not interfere with the system’s normal operation.

The MAP6KE11A can be used in a variety of applications such as line protection for AC line cord sets, telecommunications equipment, data processing equipment, line protection for DC power supplies, overvoltage protection for process and instrumentation, surge protection for solar panels, and load-switching protection for automotive electronics.
