PMIC - Gate Drivers are power management integrated circuits (ICs) designed to provide a variety of functions in one single IC. As a main part of power conversion, Gate Drivers are used as an interface between a microprocessor (MCU) and the power switch. They are connected to the MCU in order to get the driving signal and then convert it into an amplified voltage in order to control the switch. Furthermore, they can support additional functions such as thermal limiting, over-current protection and fault detection.
MAX15013BASA+T belongs to PMIC - Gate Drivers family. It provides a high-efficiency, low noise, low power, single-channel gate driver for Load Switches and MOSFETs in portable applications. It integrates a load switch with a low on-resistance and a 100mA MOSFET driver. The load switch is connected in series with the MOSFET, allowing it to be enabled and disabled with a single control pin. The MAX15013BASA+T is activated when the SHDN pin pulls up to 1.8V (logic high). It has a controlled rise time of 7μs, wide input voltage range, and is capable of driving load switches with an RON up to 1ohm.
The MAX15013BASA+T features internal over-current protection (OCP) and thermal protection (TPSD). The OCP monitors the total current through the load switch and it senses when its threshold value has been exceeded. It is then disabled, thus protecting itself and the load switch from further damage. The TPSD monitors the junction temperature of the device and it will shut down the switch if the temperature exceeds 150°C.
The MAX15013BASA+T is suitable for a wide range of applications including power-management control for LCD backlighting, as well as power and thermal management of notebook, tablet and phone systems. It is also well suited for LED drivers, hot-swap applications, and any other applications that use high current switches.
