MAX16929BGUI/V+T Application Field and Working Principle

Within the PMIC discipline, specialized functions include the MAX16929BGUI/V+T, an integrated reservoir and chargers for Li-Ion, NiMH and NiCd batteries. Overview
The MAX16929BGUI/V+T family is designed to automate and optimize charging of multiple-cell series/parallel Li-ion and NiMH/NiCd battery packs. This IC family is also equipped with low-resistance MOSFET transistors for active cell balancing.
Maxim’s MAX16929BGUI/V+T supports three charge modes for both the rechargeable battery types. For the Li-ion battery, the three modes are Constant Voltage (CV) and Constant Current (CC), and a preconditioning phase to prevent overcharging. On the other hand, for the NiMH/NiCd, the three modes are Top-Off, Refresh, and Normal which increase long-term battery life.

Working Principle
MAX16929BGUI/V+T’s Low-Dropout Linear Regulator (LDO) and MOSFETs enable the IC to precisely regulate the charge current according to the two variables, the boost voltage and System voltage. The boost voltage is the voltage of the battery pack and controlled by the adjustable internal voltage reference. Bias voltage is also adjustable via an Internal resistor. The Max16929BGUI/V+T is also equipped with comparators and an internal AFE which enables it to detect the battery\'s current and voltage simultaneously. When the power sources are connected, the chip will detect battery voltage, current and charge time interval, and then continuously monitor, regulate and automatically adjust the charge to maximize the battery\'s performance.
