MAX3080/MAX3081 are high speed, low-power, +3.3V and +5V, fail-safe, RS-485/RS-422 transceivers. The MAX3080/MAX3081 feature a partially integrated shield that reduces board area, cost, and design time. This low-power family is enhanced with low-power shutdown mode, slew rate limiting, and a feature called fail-safe — drivers remain disabled under all circumstances of ground, VCC, and open data line. It also has a unique protected data line which monitors the driver output, and disables it if an overvoltage fault occurs.
MAX3081ECSA+ is an intelligent transceiver which utilizes dual transceivers for full-duplex data transfer on up to two twisted pairs of copper wires. It offers a ±15 kV ESD rating, +/-25 kV EFT rating and is compliant with the latest standards for Surges, ESD, and EFT protection. It also features integrated 3.3 kV isolation from the line side to the logic side, high common-mode transient immunity, support for multiple interface communication protocols, low power consumption, and low typical quiescent currents ranging from 6.5 to 11.1 mA.
Application Field
MAX3081ECSA+ transceivers are used for applications where low power consumption and communication speed are important, such as Industrial Automation, Building Automation, Home Automation, Security & Surveillance, Lighting, Motor Control, Power & Energy Management, and many more. The MAX3081ECSA+ transceivers are also useful for long distance communication over RS-485/RS-422 networks (up to 120m).
Working Principle
The MAX3081ECSA+ transceivers operate in half-duplex mode and by using direction control pins can be configured in 4 different modes: transmitter, receiver, three-wire transmitter, and three-wire receiver. The transceiver consists of two drivers and two receivers. It offers low power consumption and has built-in slew rate control, EFT/ESD protection and logic interface protection.
When the drivers are enabled, the data is transmitted to the differential line. The receivers convert the differential line into single-ended logic levels. The logic signals at the output of the receiver are compared against the logic levels at the inputs of the driver. The MAX3081ECSA+ can be programmed for a wide range of communication standards.
The MAX3081ECSA+ transceiver has two shutdown pins, which can be used to place the transceiver in a low-power shutdown mode and reduce power consumption. The output enable (OE) pin can be used to control the interface and one or two transceivers can be enabled or disabled independently.
The MAX3081ECSA+ also features an automatic data direction detection. When the driver is enabled in the transmitter mode, it will automatically detect the state of the pre-defined logic level on the data line, and reverse the direction of the data transmission if necessary. This feature allows the transceiver to operate without supervision.
