The MAX338MSE/PR3+ is an analog switch/multiplexer/demultiplexer controlled by logic inputs. This device reduces system components and cost by combining transistor multiplexers, analog switches, and logic level translators into one chip. It has two analogue switchs, a two-channel multiplexer/demultiplexer with level translators, and two Schmitt-triggered, logic-controlled CMOS switches.

The MAX338MSE/PR3+ is designed to operate in the uncommitted (open-drain) condition, with pullup resistors, usually to a VCC of +5V. It is available with a 3-state or 2-state output configuration and selectable output voltage ranges. The selectable output voltage ranges are +3.3V, +5V, and +9.9V. The multiplexer/demultiplexer has four logic inputs (A0, A1, SEL, and ~SEL) that are used to control whether the device is operating as a multiplexer or demultiplexer.

When the MAX338MSE/PR3+ is used as a multiplexer, it operates as a 2 to 1 multiplexer. In this configuration, two analogue inputs (IN0 and IN1) are connected to two switches in the device, and one output (OUT0) is selected via logic input signals (A0 and A1). The logic signals select which of the two inputs is connected to the output. For example, if A0 is high, the A0-IN0 connection will be made, and if A1 is high, the A1-IN1 connection will be made.

When the MAX338MSE/PR3+ is used as a demultiplexer, it operates as a 1 to 2 demultiplexer. In this configuration, one analogue input (IN0) is connected to one switch in the device, and two outputs (OUT0 and OUT1) are selected via logic input signals (A0, A1, SEL, and ~SEL). The logic signals determine which of the two outputs is connected to the input. For example, if SEL is high, the IN0-OUT0 connection will be made, and if ~SEL is high, the IN0-OUT1 connection will be made.

The MAX338MSE/PR3+ also incorporates two CMOS switches with Schmitt-triggered logic inputs which can be used to control either analog or digital signals. The CMOS switches allow signals to pass with minimal capacitor loading and low insertion loss. In addition, the Schmitt-triggered logic inputs allow the switches to respond to wide swings in the signal voltages, providing glitch-free switching and fast turn-on times.
