The MAX3223ECDB is an ultra-low-power 3.0V to 5.5V full-duplex RS-232 transceiver. It features low operating and standby power consumption and supports data rates up to 250kbps. The MAX3223ECDB is ideal for applications that require low power and small size, such as battery-powered and portable devices, such as mobile phones and medical equipment. The device incorporates maximum transient protection for data lines and an internal charge pump for single supply operation.

The MAX3223ECDB application field includes all types of electronics equipment and systems requiring full-duplex RS-232 transceivers. It is used in video game consoles, DVD players, LCD TVs and monitors, set-top boxes, sensor networks, medical instruments and many other products.

The MAX3223ECDB provides one full-duplex RS-232 transceiver with integrated voltage translation and data detection logic. The device supports data rates up to 250kbps and features low transmit/receive idle-channel power consumption and ±15kV ESD protection. The device also features a built-in voltage translator that supports 3.0V to 5.5V single power supplies and low power consumption.

The working principle of the MAX3223ECDB is based on the use of a charge pump. A voltage translator is incorporated into the device and can be configured to run on a low voltage or single supply, or a dual supply. The device is controlled through a three-state logic enable input that enables the user to enable or disable both Transmit (Tx) and Receive (Rx) directions. On the Transmit side, the MAX3223ECDB converts the TTL/CMOS level data from the host microcontroller to the RS-232 level. On the Receive side, the device converts the RS-232 level data back to the TTL/CMOS logic level for direct connection to the host microcontroller.

The device also provides Electronic Shutdown (ESD) protection in both the direction of data flow. It can protect against Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) up to ±15kV, Human Body Model (HBM) and Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) via electrostatic protection circuits. In addition, the device has a robust framing control logic that simplifies the addition of hardware flow control. The device also features an internal power-on reset (POR) circuit, bias control and data detection logic that simplifies system design.
