The MAX3187CAX is a driver and receivers/transceiver integrated circuit (IC) manufactured by Maxim Integrated, which provides an industry-leading noise-immune data communication interface in applications. The circuit is suitable for hand-held, battery-operated devices and provides the solutions for the implementation of RS-485 and RS-422 serial data communication standards. It has been designed to be used in signalling rate of up to 250kbps, in particular, for short bus distances; hence, only one external capacitor is used for the driver section, thus providing an economical alternative for design house. Should the communication distance increases, additional external capacitors can be added to improve the communication performance of the MAX3187CAX.

The MAX3187CAX is employed in applications like motor control and smart home automation, in which its circuit part supports both receive and transmit Modes with two input/output pins, RE and DE. In the receive Mode, RE is driven by the transmitting device and after the overlapping of the transmitted and received data signals, the compare logic then generates the output data that can be monitored through the ROUT pin. In transmit Mode, DE will be driven by the receiver device and is responsible for setting the transmit enable. This is then monitored by the TOUT pin.

Adding to the features of the MAX3187CAX circuit part, both the differential ESD protection diode and the bias resistors for the transmit driver and receiver inputs have been integrated into the device, thus providing an additional protection from the eletromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio-frequency interference (RFI). Also, the device is capable of operating in single-ended mode, meaning that only one external capacitor is required to generate power down or operating modes, thus providing significant external components reduction potential.

Moreover, the MAX3187CAX also provides solution for power supply requirements, where the device itself is capable of operating on two different supply voltages, the VS and VCC. The VS is the supply to the driver power stage and works at 3.3 V and 5 V, while the VCC is the supply to the receiver and comparator voltage level and works at 1.65 V and 3.3 V and 5 V.

The device is provided in a space saving 10-lead thin shrink small outline package (TSSOP) and 8-lead thin shrink small outline package (QSOP), making it suitable for applications requiring tight space. Other added features include short-circuit current-limited receiver outputs and hot-swappable loads to pin 3, enabling direct connection to CPUs.
