The MAX3223EAP+T is a highly-flexible, low-power and low-voltage single channel RS-232 transceiver IC and driver. It enables RS-232 data communication with data rates of up to a Mbps, and operating voltages between 0V and 7V. The MAX3223EAP+T provides high-speed SN75LSX53-compliant receivers and drivers, is designed to meet strict EMI/EMC requirements, and supports manual and automatic RS-232 configuration.
The MAX3223EAP+T is a single channel device, containing a receiver, a driver, and a transceiver. The device has a low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator option when VCC is greater than 3V and provides bi-directional logic level shifting between a device and RS-232 interface. It provides manual or automatic RS-232 configuration, a ±12V receivers, and a programmable logic transmitter.
Application field

Working principle
The device will accept up to 3.6V input logic signals and can be used in a variety of data applications. The MAX3223EAP+T will convert the low-voltage logic signals from the microcontroller to the higher-voltage logic signals required for proper operation of the RS-232 interface. It will then convert the higher-voltage logic signals from the RS-232 interface back to low-voltage logic signals for the microcontroller.
The receiver will automatically detect the presence of a valid serial data signal and will properly configure the transceiver to operate in full-duplex or half-duplex mode. The receiver also contains an internal comparator and will provide a valid logic-high response when it detects a valid serial data signal. The receiver further contains a digital filter to reduce the effects of EMI/RFI.
The driver is based on the award winning CFT SmartDriver™ technology, which provides superior digital emissions and eliminates the need for external capacitors. The driver is powered by a low-dropout linear regulator when VCC is greater than 3V. When the regulator is enabled, the output driver will switch from a high to a low level as the appropriate voltage is reached.
The transceiver is configurable to work in either full-duplex or half-duplex mode. In full-duplex mode, both the receive and transmit of the data are active simultaneously. In half-duplex mode, only one direction at a time (transmit or receive) is active. If desired, the device can also be configured to automatically detect which mode is in use.
The device also supports 5V logic input thresholds as well as programmable logic low and high thresholds. This allows for communication between two microcontrollers with different logic thresholds. The MAX3223EAP+T also has a bus hold feature that will hold the data line at a valid logic level when the data line is inactive.
The MAX3223EAP+T is designed to meet the most rigorous EMI/EMC requirements. It is ESD tested to 5kV for human body model and 2kV for contact discharge. It also includes internal ESD protection diodes to protect against EMI and EMI induced noise.
Overall, the MAX3223EAP+T provides a reliable, low-power solution for high-speed RS-232 communication.
