The MAX3226EEUE+ line receiver from Maxim Integrated is an ESD-protected, 5.5V powered, Slew-Rate-Limited, 16-pin RS-232 transceiver that offers the single-supply operation and low power dissipation required in a space-constrained environment. Designed for applications requiring RS-232 connectivity, the MAX3226EEUE+ can be used in mobile devices, point-of-sale (POS) systems, building automation, data acquisition, and wireless communication systems, as well as any RS-232-based application.

The MAX3226EEUE+ Application Diagram shows the basic setup of the device and how the signal IO lines are connected to the interface. The MAX3226EEUE+ line receiver consists of two sections – the receiver section, comprised of the input buffer, a voltage reference cell, comparators, and ESD protection, and the driver section, containing four amplifier stages. Together, these sections interact to provide a low-power, low-noise, ESD-protected signal-conditioned input, and a low-power, low-noise, ESD-protected signal-conditioned output.

In the receiver section, the input buffer stage is designed to minimize noise coupling to the following stages. The voltage reference cell and the two comparators (level high and level low comparators) are used to ensure accurate ESD detection levels. The ESD protection circuitry is designed to protect both the RXD and RXG pins. To ensure reliable communication over long cable lengths, the MAX3226EEUE+ features a slew-rate-limited driver for both its TXD and TXG pins. The slew rate is user-selectable, allowing for selection of slow (up to 250Kbps data rates) or fast (up to 1Mbps data rates) slew rates.

Additionally, the driver section contains an intelligent power-down mode, which is enabled when either the RXD or RXG pin is disabled. This feature helps reduce power consumption in low-power systems, as the drivers will be turned off when the device is not in use. The power down mode can also be used to prevent data loss in the unlikely event of a power failure.

The MAX3226EEUE+ device is designed for use in harsh environments, and its low power draw and ESD protection makes it ideal for high-speed, low-power applications.
