The MAX3232CDBG4 is designed with a high performance advanced process technology, allowing it to exceed the standard RS-232 requirements of +12V and -12V power supply rails and over greater than 1 Mbps data rate. It requires very low supply current at power supply and low power consumption.
The core of the MAX3232CDBG4 is the first device in the industry to incorporate a true four wire half-duplex transceiver with an integrated 7-bit bidirectional shift register for a data rate of more than 1Mbps and over greater than 1V maximum output to input differential voltage. The integrated level shifting ensures that the processor is interfaced correctly to the RS-232 standard, while the shift register provides robust data transmission.
The bidirectional shift register works by shifting data from an input pin to the output when the clock line is enabled and shifting data from the output to the input when the clock line is disabled. This allows the MAX3232CDBG4 to maintain a data flow without needing to wait for data to be collected from the input pin and for the data to be loaded into the shift register.
The MAX3232CDBG4 also includes three input ports: a high-impedance data input, an output-enable (OE) port, and an enable-clock (E) port. The OE port and the E port both support an open-drain output, allowing the user to limit the logic level of the output signals. Open-drain output offers protection against short-circuiting in the case of a user connecting two MAX3232CDBG4s opposed to each other.
The MAX3232CDBG4 features two low-power, high-performance voltage-level conversion circuits, which are used to convert the input and output logic levels between two logic families. For example, an input signal of 0V to +3.3V could be converted to +12V and 0V. The voltage conversion circuits are driven by a single power supply, and their operation is self-timed.
The MAX3232CDBG4 also includes a wide-bandwidth charge pump for providing the necessary voltage conversion. The charge pump circuit can be manually adjusted to enable the device to accurately control the boos or reduce the output\'s swing. The charge pump accuracy is typically better than ±5%.
