The MAX3232CDWRE4 is a voltage-level serial port signal converting chip developed by Maxim Integrated Products, commonly referred to as UART (universal asynchronous receiver-transmitter). The chip can realize the conversion of 3 volts or 5 volts signal and the interchange of TTL serial port and RS232 data signal, reforming the signal transmitted by MAX3232CDWRE4 into RS232 signal.

The MAX3232CDWRE4 interfaces RS232 and RS485 ports to microprocessors. Its main application is the realization of communication between a computer and a serial port device such as a modem, digital telephone, printer, router and GSM system, which enables the two sides of the communication to exchange data signals and to conduct USB, parallel or serial port communication. Working Principle:

The MAX3232CDWRE4 has two horizontal differential receiver stages and three vertical current output driver stages. When the MAX3232CDWRE4 is in operation, the two independent port transceivers build up the circular communication between two devices. The only difference between them is that the voltage level of output port cannot be higher than 3 volts at the receiver side. This must be taken into consideration for the correct configuration of devices during installation. The chip is designed with two active-low pins. When the pins are enabled, the differential receivers will detect signals from the input port. The current output from the connected driver will drive the output port to oscillate if a valid signal has been detected. When no active-low pin is enabled, the differential receivers will not detect any signals and the driver will not output any current. All of the output port pins are TRISE and the chip will be placed in power-saved mode. This mode will help to extend the operating time of the chip on battery. In addition, the chip features two input data port pins (T1 and R1) and two output data port pins (T2 and R2). The chip can detect signals driven by the sender, and filter the unnecessary noise. The two output port pins are both tristate, which will help to extend the operation time in power saving mode and prevent from accidental damage due to invalid control signals.
