MAX3232ECPWR is an integrated line transceiver that is designed for RS-232 communications in small packages. It is ideal for low-power and battery-powered systems. It includes a low-power schottky-based receiver and a high-power FET driver. The small package size makes it ideal for portable applications, including laptops and PDAs. The MAX3232ECPWR supports asynchronous data transfer between data terminal equipment (DTEs) and data circuit-terminating equipment (DCEs).

The MAX3232ECPWR application field covers serial data communications in various fields like RF modules, half-duplex modems, barcode scanners, medical devices, instrumentation equipment, and industrial automation systems. It is suitable for the applications that need level conversion of digital signals with the help of a simple and integrated device. The MAX3232ECPWR offers a low power design with power-down modes for reduced current consumption. It supports asynchronous data transfer speeds up to 250K baud with no external components. Its built-in AutoShutdown feature minimizes supply current to less than 1µA in standby mode, conserving power in battery-powered applications. The device provides a low voltage design that supports operation from a single 3–5V supply and reduced EMI.

The MAX3232ECPWR transceivers feature a true 10–15kV ESD protection, typically reducing the number of ESD protection components that are required in designs. This device supports operation with a logic 1, logic 0 or logic "high impedance" state data input and output. The MAX3232ECPWR provides on-chip 0.2µF bypass capacitors with an internal low-power schottky-based receiver.

The MAX3232ECPWR works on the voltage level-shift mechanism. It supports the conversion of logic-level input signals from +3V to +15V to the RS232 TIA/EIA-232E compatible signal levels. This principle is known as line transceiver and this device supports the conversion of RS232 signals from both bipolar-type and uni-polar-type. The device will adjust the differential line levels according to the signal level inputs and sends it on the line.

The IC provides the signal inverters for the RS-232D format. The signal inverters are used for the proper reversal of the data line signals. That is why, the RS-232 compatible devices need an inverter circuit to properly receive data. The signal is added to the o/p which is sent to the other device via a differential line and the same signal is subtracted again to generate the correct signal which is placed in the input line. Then the signal is passed to the receiving device.

The MAX3232ECPWR device supports the 9-bit asynchronous and full-duplex data transfer modes. This IC incorporates true EIA/TIA-232E line drivers and receivers, and is designed to operate using low power. It is available in a space-saving 16-pin narrow-body SOIC and 20-pin TSSOP packages, and both packages areESD protected. The device is rated for an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C.
