<p>Introduction to MAX3232EIDB</p><p>MAX3232EIDB is a 3.0V to 5.5V powered, two-channel, levels-shifting serial transceiver supporting data rates up to 250Kbps. It features low power, low noise, and low supply current along with full protection against ±15KV ESD on all signal pins. The MAX3232EIDB uses Maxim semiconductor’s proprietary 60V ESD-protected integrated circuits technology. This technology is the first fully integrated, general-purpose ESD protected transceiver for the popular RS-232 serial bus. </p><p>Application Field</p><p>The MAX3232EIDB can be used in many applications, including data communications, telecommunications, industrial and medical instruments, computers, and office automation equipment. It can eliminate the need for additional external ESD protection components and reduce board space.</p><p>The MAX3232EIDB can also be used to interface 3.3V and 5V serial transmitters and receivers, eliminating the need for separate bias resistors and level shifters. This application field also applies in other situations such as interfacing to two-wire slaves, like I2C compatible devices.</p><p>Working Principle</p><p>As an interface device, the MAX3232EIDB works by converting logic levels from the data transmitters and receivers, from the low side of the device (transmitters side) to the high side of the device (receivers side).</p><p>The device consists of two independent transceivers. Each transceiver is both a receiver and a driver, with an active-low enable pin. The receiver on each side has an open-collector output and is not directly connected to the receiver on the opposite side, unlike other RS-232 transceivers. Instead, a logic level shifter is used in between the two receivers to convert their logic levels. </p><p>The driver consists of three transistor switches. Each switch is connected to a separate output pin and has three control pins, such that one pin turns the switch on, one pin turns it off, and the third pin provides an enable signal. The enable signal is active-low, meaning it is low when the switch is enabled and high when it is disabled.
