The MAX3241EUI+ is a 1.8 V µMAX® RS-485/RS-422 transceiver designed to conventional 1U PSPC- and 3U SOPC-compatible serial applications. The MAX3241EUI+ is characterized for operation from -40°C to +85°C and is available in 10-pin µMAX and space-saving 8-pin SO packages.
The MAX3241EUI+ features an enable input (E) pin, which is used for enabling or disabling the device. The E pin control logic is reversed, which enables the MAX3241EUI+ when the pin is at logic-low level and disables it when the pin is at logic-high level. When the E pin is at logic-high level, the device is in low-power shutdown mode with standby current of only 100 µA at 1.8 V.
The MAX3241EUI+ is especially well-suited for use in point-to-point, multidrop, and multi-point communication networks, such as office and factory automation systems, instrumentation, LANs, and other control applications. Working Principle of the MAX3241EUI+
The MAX3241EUI+ features an internal differential line driver and an internal differential line receiver, capable of driving up to 64 nodes in a half-duplex operation (one driver and one receiver per line) with their enable inputs (EE and RE respectively) connected to a logic-low level. The MAX3241EUI+ allows for the transmission of data at rates up to 10 Mbps through common twisted-pair data communication cables. The receiver is designed to accept up to ±25 V signals with five common-mode ranges
The transmitter section of the MAX3241EUI+ is supplied by the RTS pin and is an open-collector totem-pole output with an internal pull-up resistor (typically 5 kΩ) connected to VCC. The RTS pin supplies the transmitter with a constant VCC even when E is at logic-low level. The compatiability of the MAX3241EUI+ to the EIA/TIA-422 and EIA/TIA-485 standards is achieved by the internal termination resistors (1/4th of a unit-load) within the device.
The receiver section of the MAX3241EUI+ is supplied by the RD pin and is also an open-collector totem-pole output with an internal pull-down resistor (typically 5 kΩ) connected to ground. The RD pin supplies the receiver with a constant 0 V even when the receiver is disabled by the RE pin at a logic-high level.
The MAX3241EUI+ features a slew-rate limited driver, with a low-frequency transmission line to suppress EMI and high-frequency noise without external components, while still allowing data transmitted through the network to reach its destination. The transmitter can be enabled with only a logic-low level voltage, thus allowing the unit to be connected directly to the data bus. Furthermore, the MAX3241EUI+ is designed to be highly power-efficient, consuming lower standby current when operating at lower supply voltages.
