The MAX3245EWI is a 3.3 V powered,half-duplex, differential line driver/receiver designed for RS-485 and RS-422A communications. It supports speeds up to 80 Mbps and is characterized for operation from 0°C to +70°C. It is a low power device with a typical 230 μA total supply current at 80 Mbps and operates in 3-state. The MAX3245EWI is available in a space-saving 8-pin thin TSSOP package.

The MAX3245EWI is an excellent fit for applications where a mix of features are required such as fast data rate, low power, small size and a wide supply voltage range. In addition, it requires no external components for proper operation, making it particularly suitable for cost-sensitive systems. The MAX3245EWI is ideal for many applications including industrial process control, medical instrumentation, automation and network systems such as power meters and gaming machines.

The MAX3245EWI driver/receiver operates with a single 5-V supply (normal power mode) or with a split supply of +3.3V and -3.3V. The supply current varies almost linearly with data rate, thus reducing power consumption at low data rates. The differential driver/receiver utilizes advanced Scrambler technology to reduce bit-error rate (BER). It is dynamically self-calibrating, as it uses on-chip capacitors to monitor and automatically adjust the driver/receiver common-mode voltage of the device.

The MAX3245EWI device meets the EIA standard RS-485 and RS-422A electrical characteristics. The MAX3245EWI differential line driver is a low-cost, single-chip solution for the transmission of data over long distances and in noisy environments, where single-ended signals have difficulty maintaining an adequate signalling level. It has an open-collector output which can pull the line all the way up to Vcc or all the way down to ground, ensuring sufficient voltage swing at the far end of the line. In addition, its high driver insulation voltage (2.2 KV RMS) enables it to withstand large common-mode transients.

The MAX3245EWI differential line receiver works as a differential comparator. The two inputs of the receiver compare the differential voltage on the bus and interpret it as logic 0 or logic 1. It has a low threshold of 250 mV and a high threshold of 800 mV. The MAX3245EWI features a high common-mode range of -7V to +12V, the typical range being -3V to +3V. The linked-mode and independent-mode features allows to drive both ends of the data line simultaneously, making it suitable for full-duplex applications.

The MAX3245EWI also features a power-down state where the driver/receiver outputs are in a high impedance mode. In this state, dynamic power consumption is minimized, allowing operation in battery-powered applications. The MAX3245EWI is also pin-compatible with dedicated RS-485 part, simplifying design.
