The MAX3248ECAI is part of the portfolio of family of low-power, low-voltage, hot-swap RS-485/RS-422 transceivers intended for use in computer and industrial networks applications where reliable communications and protection of host ports and system data is required. The MAX3248ECAI transceiver combines three main Low-Power, low-voltage RS-485/RS-422 transceiver functions:

• An RS-422 line driver
• An RS-485 line driver
• An RS-485 Differential Receiver

It is designed for industrial and networks applications, where power dissipation and electromagnetic interference (EMI) must be minimized. This single-channel device is ideal for replacing 2:1 or 2:2 multiplexers when two channels are necessary, while saving several external components and reducing power consumption.

The MAX3248ECAI provides a bidirectional differential data signal communication interface on an RS-422/RS-485 network. When used as an RS-485 transceiver, the device complies with the EIA/TIA-485-A standard for balanced-voltage communication. Operation with baud rates up to 10 Mbps is supported for both standard and low power modes.

The MAX3248ECAI supports both one-way and two-way communication and supports hot-swapping of bidirectional transceivers on the same bus. The device can be reconfigured to use either the 4 pF to 6.5 pF differential output impedance range or the 100 pF differential output impedance range, providing optimum compatibility with both RS-485 and RS-422 cables.

The MAX3248ECAI includes an internal 3-state driver and receiver buffer which are used to transmit and receive data. The driver and receiver are also capable of communicating in half-duplex mode when operating in idle (disconnect) mode. The MAX3248ECAI also includes a low-power sleep mode feature, reducing power consumption when nodes are inactive.
