The MAX3483ECPA+ is a low-power, ±15 kV ESD-protected, true RS-485/RS-422 transceiver. This transceiver is designed to provide robust communication port protection with excellent ESD ratings and consume very low quiescent power. Its full duplex asynchronous communication and low noise tolerance help to ensure reliable operation in electrically noisy environments.
Embedded circuit design has always been limited by the physical and electrical needs of application which required a variety of communication ports, ranging from the most basic I2C, SPI and UART ports, to the more advanced CAN bus, Ethernet and USB ports. The MAX3483ECPA+ successfully bridged a few of the communication ports with its dual directional (Tx and Rx) function. This transceiver features an internal charge-pump DC-DC converter to operate from a single +5V power supply, with true-RS485/RS-422 transceiver driver and receiver functions. It enables high speed communication up to 10Mbps, not limited to short-distance communication only.
The MAX3483ECPA+ is also characterized by low bus turn-around time and data rate accuracy over a wide range of conditions. It is based on a typical configuration of six total pins, including two differential (TxD, RxD) and four power pins (VCC, GND, DE, RE), where the DE and RE are the enable pins for the driver/receiver.
With this transceiver, flexibility is an added advantage as its driver enables users to switch between modes of operations such as full-duplex, half-duplex and multiple drop mode. All driver/receiver pins are protected up to ±15kV ESD rating, aiding in immunity against electrostatic discharge. Low power consumption and two-kV ESD ripples on the line further ensure reliable communication in the noisy environment by providing protection against induced noise and ESD destruction.
The receiver section has a typical data rate of up to 10Mbps, with a 7 ns typical data transition time and a 7 ns typical response time in receiver mode. The receiver section of the MAX3483ECPA+ is designed to facilitate outstanding noise tolerance, with a noise margin of up to ±25mV, while maintaining a high level of data reliability and data rate accuracy at the same time.
Its innovative power-on reset circuitry is an effective self-protection against power-up spikes with a reset pulse duration of 80 ms. It also has an integrated current fault monitoring for anti-lock protection. Its low power consumption further adds to the advantages, providing further efficiency and cost savings.
This transceiver is ideally suited for applications such as industrial automation, automotive, security systems, HVAC, packaging, robotics and automation, Power-over-Ethernet, networking, general communications and many more that require its robust protection against ESD. In summary, the MAX3483ECPA+ provides connections for reliable, robust and noise-tolerant communication with a true RS-485/RS-422 transceiver that protects the system from electrostatic discharge, crosstalk and extraneous noise, and is backed by an extensive ESD protection of up to ±15kV.
