Introduction of MAX3491ECPD Application Field and Working Principle

MAX3491ECPD is an I2C/SPI interface-compatible three port ESD protection and voltage translator device. It provides protected high and low ESD insensitive terminals for a bidirectional I2C or SPI interface, supporting supply voltages from 1.2V to 3.6V. This product integrates three low voltage bidirectional transceivers, an overvoltage protection circuit and ESD protection to simplify system design. By combining bidirectional transceivers, low voltage I/Os, ESD protection and voltage translators, this device provides unidirectional and bidirectional ESD protection for I2C and SPI interfaces.

Driving and Receiving

The MAX3491ECPD contains three transceivers, two I2C/SPI receivers and one multiplexer. Receivers are used to detect input signals, while each of the three transceivers contains two high gain, class AB outputs. Transceivers provide a balanced output driving between -35mA and +35mA with load capacitance up to 200pF. This enables the device to avoid low EMI radiation, while maintaining low power consumption of only 4µA in any mode.

Transceivers

The MAX3491ECPD also includes three low voltage transceivers that offer bidirectional ESD protection for I2C/SPI signals. All three transceivers include a Schmitt-trigger input buffer and a differential output driver with a power-saving feature. Transceivers contain a built-in asymmetric slew rate that allows for fast signal rise time, yet slow signal fall time to reduce EMI radiation and improve system signal integrity. Because the signal out of the transceiver is differential, the signal is slow to start and fast to stop — helping maintain signal integrity.

ESD Protection

Using proprietary ESD protection technology, MAX3491ECPD also provides coupling protection, as well as overvoltage protection and 15KV HBM ESD protection. These features make it suitable for application environments, such as industrial and automotive designs, that need robust ESD protection. The device also has an on-chip multiplexer, which can be used to select two of the three differential outputs. In addition, a logic level neutralization line supports intentional static discharge to provide better ESD protection by eliminating residual static charges.

Voltage Translation

The MAX3491ECPD also supports voltage translation from one voltage range to another depending on the VDD supply. When the VDD supply is between 1.2V and 1.8V, the device supports 5V logic high levels; when the VDD supply is between 1.8V and 3.6V, the device supports 3.3V logic high levels. The device also features slew rate control to reduce EMI and jitter, reducing the chance of destructive crosstalk between systems.
