The MAX3711ETG+ is an advanced, current-mode limiting amplifier designed for applications that require superior optical dynamic range, sub-nanosecond response times, and an electronic variable gain control. This device is specifically designed to operate over an extended temperature range (-45°C to 105°C). The MAX3711ETG+ provides an integrated variable gain amplifier (VGA) and limiting amplifier, optimized for use in optical receiver applications with data rates up to 25 Gbps. The product combines low-noise and linearity performance with simplicity and programmability in a single device. The device includes an integrated VGA, limiter, preamplifier, feedback loop and VGA gain-control inputs.

The device consists of two main functionality blocks: a variable gain amplifier (VGA) and limiting amplifier. The device also includes a preamplifier, feedback loop, and variable gain control inputs. The VGA has a wide gain range and a low power consumption of only 1.35 uA/MHz. The limiting amplifier provides superior optical dynamic range, fast response times (less than 1 ns), and programmable gain/offset control. The VGA and limiting amplifier are controlled via two-wire serial interface (I2Ccompatible) and two digital control inputs.

The VGA input is protected by a low-noise, wide bandwidth ESD protection circuit which features high-speed transient protection (35 ns risetime). The VGA is optimized for operation over an extended temperature range (-45°C to 105°C). The VGA is capable of supporting different data rates ranging from 1 Gbps to 12.2 Gbps with bandwidths as low as 350 MHz. The device has a single-ended input and differential output and can be used with any signal level from 1.8V to 5.5V.

The limiting amplifier provides a wide optical dynamic range of 72 dB and a dual-frequency equalization allowing data transmission up to 25 Gbps with less than a 1dB penalty. The device includes an integrated feedback loop which minimizes overhead required to set up and control signal level of the pre-amplifier stage. The device is also capable of supporting signal rates up to 25 Gbps with a flat-top frequency response. The device has four integrated voltage controlled attenuators (VCAs) with independently settable gains which allow for precise optical power control.
