MAX3941ETG-T is a transformer-coupled 4-channel RS-485 transceiver optimized for automotive applications. It is suitable for applications like Data, Voice and Audio Over Long Distance and is compliant with ISO11898-2 and ISO11898-5 automotive specifications. It supports data rates up to 1Mbps and is designed to operate over a wide temperature range of -40℃ to +125℃.
The basic architecture of the MAX3941ETG-T uses the RS-485 digital signaling scheme. It consists of a differential line driver and a differential line receiver that are connected by a center-tapped transformer for robust balanced-line transmission. This architecture enables an overall common mode range of -7V to +12V and 5kV galvanic ESD protection. The transformer also enables a communication interface from 3V to 5V and a low noise, low power consumption (only 5mA).
The RS-485 line driver accepts 3.3V or 5V logic level inputs and provides four differential TTL-compatible signals for transmitting data over full- or half-duplex systems. The driver includes the necessary logic to assert RTS (Request To Send) and DIR (Direction). The TTL outputs can also be interfaced directly to transceivers at higher or lower logic levels. The output data rate is programmable up to 1Mbps based on the input clock. The driver also features improved EMI performance by including short-circuit protection and LED drivers to drive two LED indicators.
The RS-485 line receiver provides a low-impedance differential receiver with a common mode range of -7V to +12V and features adjustable hysteresis and deglitch filters. The output of the hysteresis filter is two TTL-compatible outputs that are used to distinguish between logical ‘1’ and logical ‘0’. The Receiver also incorporates an LED indicator to drive an LED for interface status monitoring.
Apart from providing a robust differential transmission of data, MAX3941ETG-T also includes many safety features like 5kV galvanic ESD protection for both the line driver and receiver, under-voltage lockouts that prevent the transceiver from operating if the supply voltage drops below 4V and a graceful shutdown during power-on/off sequences.
