The MAX5973ETL+ is a power supply controller, monitor, and supervisor integrated circuit (IC) family from Maxim Integrated that features local control, bi-directional remote sense, accurate current and voltage monitoring, Total Error Correction (TEC), voltage sequencing and remote ON/OFF control.
When it comes to power supply design, the MAX5973ETL+ addresses some of the most challenging design problems. The IC is designed to help extend the longevity of system power supply by providing accurate current and voltage monitoring and helping to correct for common errors and voltage dips. Additionally, the MAX5973ETL+ is capable of delivering adjustable current thresholds for the protection of local and remote power supplies, for both AC and DC applications. This IC is ideal for applications including hot swap, non-isolated DC-DC converters, secondary rails and AC adapters.

Furthermore, the flexible programming of fault discharge time and two current thresholds can protect the local supply, while simultaneously protecting secondary power sources.
The MAX5973ETL+ can be used in a variety of non-isolated DC-DC power supply configurations, such as buck, buck-boost, SEPIC, flyback, and COT converters. Additionally, the supporting circuitry required to implement the MAX5973ETL+ is minimal, making the IC ideal for today’s high density, ultra-low power designs.
Working Principle
The MAX5973ETL+ can be used in systems that require local sequencing, power monitoring, and adjustable current thresholds for AC and DC supplies. In a typical application, the ‘+’ terminal of the local supply is monitored for current and voltage by an Over Current Protection (OCP) and Over Voltage Protection (OVP) circuit. When the voltages sense OCP or OVP thresholds, the MAX5973ETL+ acts as a linear regulator and reduces the output voltage to the nominal target.
The MAX5973ETL+ also provides Total Error Correction (TEC) to reduce the effects of voltage dips, and it can be controlled remotely from an I2C bus, allowing for remote shutdown. In addition, the IC features voltage sequencing which can be used to provide supply ramp-up and ramp-down for multiple supplies in a system. The IC can also be configured to set different current thresholds for alternating levels of load, providing additional protection for secondary sources.
The MAX5973ETL+ is designed to offer high efficiency and minimal component count, allowing for maximum performance in the smallest possible design volume.
