The MAX712CPE high-efficiency linear charge controller for NiCd and NiMH batteries combines an advanced NiCd/NiMH detection/step-charge algorithm with auto-recharge and an adjustable charge current. This highly versatile device operates with input voltages up to 18V and delivers up to 1.2A charge. It includes user adjustable end-of-charge voltages, trickle-charge current, fast-charge time and input Brown-Out protection.The MAX712CPE is suited for applications where precision and battery life are of eminent importance as it maintains a constant voltage during the fast-charge cycle for superior charge accuracy. Moreover, the voltages are independently adjustable for high and low rates, allowing optimization for different battery sizes. Furthermore, it can be easily used for floating or slow charge applications by setting the fast-charge voltage to the termination voltage. The MAX712CPE power management IC is a PMIC product suitable for the battery charger field. It combines an advanced NiCd/NiMH detection/step-charge algorithm with auto-recharge and an adjustable charge current to provide battery charging applications with excellent accuracy, high efficiency and long battery life.The MAX712CPE works in linear mode and its charge current is adjustable. It has user adjustable end-of-charge voltages, trickle-charge current, fast-charge time and input Brown-Out protection, ensuring efficient and safe battery charging. It can be used as a linear type charger with a precise accuracy, or as a constant voltage regulator. It also features over-voltage protection and current limiting that prevent battery damage due to excessive charging. In addition, the chip includes temperature based monitoring and current limit thresholds adjustments, allowing it to accurately charge NiCd and NiMH batteries of different sizes.The MAX712CPE has a switching frequency of 140 KHz and is operated with input voltages up to 18V. This ensures a high efficiency (greater than 90%) for maximum battery life.
