MAX712EPE+ is a Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC) from the range of MAX712 family that are especially designed for supplying power sources to rechargeable battery applications. It is capable of operating from a wide input voltage range from 3.6V to 18V, a single Li+ battery or Li+ battery stack with minimum external components. This PMIC\'s flexible and robust operating range allows for large tolerance in the battery voltage and also a large variety of input-voltage sources.
The MAX712EPE+ offers a regulated output voltage between 4.1V and 8.4V, which can support both Li+ and NiCd, as well as NiMh rechargeable batteries up to 1.5A with a very low ripple. The output voltage is adjustable from the general external voltage source, with a resistor divider from the input source, combined with an external reference voltage hysteretic-based precision voltage loop. All these features make the MAX712EPE+ ideal for applications that require an easy-to-use optimal battery charger, like portable digital cameras, PDAs, smart phones, and wearables.
Aside from its high efficiency (90%), low quiescent current, and small package, the MAX712EPE+ also offers easily programmable operating modes—fast charge mode and top-off charge mode—that can be configured through MODE pin selection, ideal for different kinds of battery system requirements. In the fast charge mode, the MAX712EPE+ applies a fully constant current until the specified voltage output is reached where constant voltage is maintained. The top-off charge mode keeps the charging current running until the charge current drops to a certain value, ensuring an optimal and stable charging performance for the battery system.
The MAX712EPE+ has amazingly simple design features unique to MAX712 family’s PMIC. The PGOOD output notifies the system when whatever voltage is applied at the output is stable, and the EN/UVCL pin ensures a linear response for the battery charger. The MAX712EPE+ has a shutdown function too, which can be activated by keeping the MODE pin at low voltage. Other simple design features include a thermal foldback, reverse current protection through current-limit regulation, and a green mode, which allows the end user to bypass any unnecessary system circuitry and reduce overall costs.
The MAX712EPE+ is an ideal PMIC for battery charging applications, with robust input and output characteristics, allowing a wide variety of chemistry options in terms of both charge current and voltage.
