Integrated circuit supervisors are used in a variety of electronic systems, from consumer electronics devices to advanced industrial systems, to provide reliable and stable supervision of power supplies and power-on reset signals. MAX794ESE+T is an example of an integrated circuit supervisor which combines both a high accuracy voltage supervisor and an advanced pushbutton reset timer. The MAX794ESE+T provides both power-on reset and power supply monitoring for micro-controllers, DSP’s, consumer, and industrial applications. It is designed for systems where accuracy, performance and flexibility are critical. It exhibits very good reset accuracy over a wide temperature range, with an accuracy of just 0.4% for a 5Vdc power supply under –40℃ to +85℃. It is designed to be powered directly from the system power supply and operates from 3.0V to 15.0V. It has two outputs, Reset and Power Good, and features programmable reset timing, manual reset button and active low reset function.

The MAX794ESE+T contains a Pushbutton Reset timer, which allows the user to press a manual reset button to reset the device in case of system failure. The timer is programmed such that the reset pulse must be held low for 400msecs before the reset is triggered. The timer is also programmable via external resistors to provide reset pulses of 1.2 to 18.0 seconds.

The chip also contains a power supply supervision circuit. This circuit monitors the voltage at the power supply input for abnormalities. A change in output level is detected at 4.63V and above, from 0.2V less than the nominal supply voltage. This is to prevent instances of the system accidentally being reset due to electrical noise.

The Power Good output is capable of driving TTL loads, and its active low asserted level is user-programmable between 1.24V and 4.4V. The Power Good output is delayed for a period of time programmed with an external resistor between 0.7mS and 6.2S.

The Power On Reset (POR) output is controlled by the VDD input voltage, and it asserts its active low reset pulse according to the user-programmable voltage levels, over a range of 3.2V to 5.2V. The rise time and fall time of the reset pulse can also be programmed, with a minimum rise/fall rate of 500mV/mS and a maximum of 1.25V/sec.

In order to provide protection against undesirable transients in the system, such as electro-static discharge (ESD), the MAX794ESE+T has built-in electrostatic discharge protection circuitry. This ensures that the device is not damaged by internal discharges that may be caused by electro-static fields.

The MAX794ESE+T is a highly integrated device that provides all the necessary functions for reliable monitoring and power supply control for a wide range of applications.
