The MAX798ESE+T is a DC-DC switching controller used as a Voltage Regulator in the Power Management IC (PMIC) space. It utilizes an External Sense Resistor (ESR) for control of DC bus voltage regulation in a wide range of applications, including telecommunications systems, industrial control, medical, battery-operated devices, and aviation. The MAX798ESE+T provides overvoltage protection, and designed with a wide voltage range with precise voltage regulation. The MAX798ESE+T provides two sets of output voltage control. The first output voltage range is 0.4 V to 5 V and the second output voltage range is 0.4 V to 10 V with a minimum current of 10 mA. The switches consist of an external MOSFET and its latest Multiprompt-Latch setting feature ensures reliable current limitation. These features, in combination with its low power consumption, make it an ideal solution for cost-effective power management.
A simplified internal operating principle of the MAX798ESE+T is shown below. An external R1 and R2 sense resistor sense the voltage across the output nodes. The on-board voltage regulator IC monitors the voltage across the sense resistors and provides a control voltage or voltage compensation (VC). The combination of the VC and the reference voltage (VREFi) is then compared to a threshold reference voltage (VREF) by the voltage comparator which controls the external NMOS switch.
The PWM controller provides a controlled on-time (tON) and off-time (tOFF) of the external MOSFET switch based on the control voltage (VC). The on-time control voltage (VC) is proportional to the magnitude of the sensed output voltage (Vo) and the reference voltage (VREF). This results in the optimal regulation of the output voltage.
If output voltage reaches the defined overvoltage protection trip level, the device will enter protection mode and trigger a shutdown logic. The logic will then disable the external switch and cut off the load current supply to the system. This feature provides overvoltage protection and extended operational life for the device.
