The MC10EL34DG is a dual programmable frequency divider designed to form the basis of a clock generator or a frequency synthesizer. It is capable of producing up to 5 outputs and each output can be programmed to be either a frequency divider (1 to 32 in steps of 1) or a pulse generator (1 to 8 in steps of 1).

The device contains two independent, identical frequency dividers. Each frequency divider consists of 3 flip-flops connected in a cascading fashion. The first flip-flop is connected to the input clock and the second flip-flop is connected to the output of the first flip-flop. The third flip-flop is connected to the output of the second flip-flop and the output of the third flip-flop is available as the output.

The dividers are clocked by either an internal clock generator or an external clock. The internal clock generator is based on the existing oscillator circuit and uses a processor-controlled programmable oscillator circuit. The external clock is a clock signal applied to the CLOCK pin that can be DC-coupled or AC-coupled. The internal oscillator is used when no external clock is applied, and the external clock can be disabled and enabled as needed.

The MC10EL34DG has two modes of operation, namely Normal Mode and SYNTHESIZER mode. In Normal Mode, only the output of the second flip-flop is available and the output is a frequency divided version of the input clock.
