The MC33302DWR2 is a step-down high performance monolithic DC-DC converter, categorized as an AC-DC Converter, Offline Switcher, for applications in an automotive environment. The device operates from a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 20V and provides up to 2A of continuous output current at 20V. The output current setting as well as output voltage is trimmed at the factory over the full temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.The MC33302DWR2 converter is capable of providing excellent line and load regulation performance, with a low 12mV ripple and a fast transient response. It integrates a Power MOSFET and a fast control loop to provide good efficiency, minimal clock noise and excellent thermal conditions. It also includes over-temperature protection by shutting off the output and latching off in order to protect the system.The MC33302DWR2 operates in pulse-width modulated (PWM) step-down (buck) converter topology to provide an output voltage that is lower than the input voltage. It applies a switching current from the input voltage to the inductor and generates the output voltage through its Schottky diode. The PWM output is pulse-width modulated with bursts at different duty cycles to maintain the output voltage at the specific level, which is determined by the external components.The MC33302DWR2 integrates a feedback control loop to regulate the output voltage and current according to the external components connected to it. It consists of an error amplifier, a voltage reference, and a current sense amplifier. The error amplifier receives the feedback signal input and compares it with the reference voltage, which is connected to the output voltage. When the voltage at the error amplifier input is lower than the reference voltage, the output voltage of the error amplifier is low and vice versa. Then the output stage is enabled, allowing current to start flowing into the inductor. When the feedback signal is equal to the reference level, the output stage of the error amplifier becomes inactive, thus maintaining the output voltage.The MC33302DWR2 also includes a current sense circuit, which comprises a current amplifier and an external current-sense resistor. This current sense is used to limit the output current and protect the integrated power MOSFET from any overload.The MC33302DWR2 can also be configured for power-saving operation using a PFM configuration. It uses two pins to enable/disable the error amplifier. When operating in this mode, the output voltage of the error amplifier keeps the power MOSFET disabled during load conditions. Then when the load current condition changes, the error amplifier is enabled.
