MC34978EK is a specialized three-phase electric motor interface IC used to detect motor overload and for power sequencing applications. This IC is part of Microchip’s ever expanding microcontroller peripherals and MOSFET controller IC series. The MC34978EK integrates low-level power switch control, current sensing and over-current detection features.

The IC consists of a low-voltage regulator, advanced low-side power MOSFET switches, three-phase current monitoring circuit, and three protected analog current input pins. The integrated voltage regulator can be used to supply power to the IC from any supply voltage from 5V to 36V. It also provides overvoltage and reverse polarity protection to the IC.

MC34978EK monitors and reports over-current status via digital output to the system. It can detect motor overload and trigger the controlled shut down of the motor. In addition, the IC can perform power sequencing operations by activating and deactivating the motor power lines in accordance with the application’s sequence.

The motor interface IC also has a low-side MOSFET control that allows the current flowing through the motor to be monitored. This current sensing capability enables the IC to detect short circuits and over-current conditions. The current is monitored by applying the outputs from three protected analog current inputs to the integrated multiplexer.
