PMIC - Supervisors: MCP809T-300I/TTVAO application field and working principle
Integrated Circuit (IC) supervisors, also known as Power Management ICs (PMICs) are semiconductor devices used to provide independent power supplies to other components in a system, maintain system performance levels and protect the system against outages, such as power failures. A PMIC used for this purpose is known as a “supervisory IC”. These devices can be used to monitor a variety of parameters including voltage, current and system temperature, and can be used in a variety of applications including industrial, consumer, communications and automotive.
The MCP809T-300I/TTVAO from Microchip Technology Inc. is a programmable supervisor IC with 2 independent output channels, ideal for providing over-voltage, under-voltage, over-current and temperature protection in both industrial and consumer applications. The MCP809T-300I/TTVAO features a variety of features, such as an adjustable or fixed output voltage and current limit points, adjustable hysteresis and thermal protection, along with an internal temperature sensor to ensure system safety. The device also provides over-temperature, over-current, under-voltage and over-voltage protection.
The MCP809T-300I/TTVAO can be used to provide system voltage supervision in a wide range of applications, from commercial power supplies and motor control to batteries and embedded systems. The device is ideal for systems where cost and system space are critical, as it does not require external resistors for external components for voltage or current scaling. The device is also capable of monitoring inputs up to 40V and providing an output voltage up to 60V.
In terms of working principle, the MCP809T-300I/TTVAO monitor the input voltage and current of the device and are capable of comparing the input voltage and current values to two different references voltages, the supply voltage (Vcc) and an internally generated reference voltage (Vref). The voltage on the Vcc pin must be greater than the reference voltage (Vref) in order for the output to be enabled. The output can be enabled either by setting a logic high level on the input pin (EN#_x) or by setting the threshold voltage on the Vcc pin. This threshold (Vt) can be set using the external Vcc Pot.
The device also has an internal temperature sensor which monitors the system temperature and compares it to the programmed Hysteresis temperature (THYST). When the temperature exceeds the Hysteresis threshold, the MCP809T-300I/TTVAO will disable the Output, thus protecting the system from any possible over-temperature conditions. Additionally, the Vcc Pot can be used to program the Vcc voltage, which allows the IC to protect the system against any over-voltage conditions. If the Vcc voltage reaches the programmed Over Voltage Threshold (VOV) then the output will be disabled, thus protecting the system.
In summary, the MCP809T-300I/TTVAO is an ideal device for supervising voltage, current and temperature in many applications, offering various protection levels and adjustable hystereses, making it perfect for applications where cost and system space are priority.
