The MIC2182BM is a monolithic CMOS Buck DC/DC switching controller that can manage complex power supply designs with efficiency. It contains all necessary functions to build a complete, compact and cost-effective switching voltage regulator such as output voltage control, programmable soft start, undervoltage lockout (UVLO), current limit, and a PWM oscillator.

The device operates with current-mode control, using voltage feedback and is available in several non-synchronous versions with various current and voltage ratings. The MIC2182BM is ideal for powering ASICs, microprocessors, DSPs, SRAMs, Flash, and other high performance circuits, as well as being suitable for portable and battery-powered applications such as mobile phones and PDAs.

The MIC2182BM is a DC-DC switching controller suitable for a wide range of switching power supplies with up to 10A of output current. Examples include on-board, brick and off-line (OFFLINE) DC-DC converters, fly-back or forward converters, as well as Class D audio amplifiers and other power supply applications. It is also useful in low-noise, high-efficiency buck regulators, linear regulators and Class D audio amplifiers. Due to its selectable programmable soft-start and included current limit, the MIC2182BM is well suited for applications with high inrush currents and wide input and output ranges.

Working Principle:

The MIC2182BM uses a current-mode control architecture and is available in various current and voltage ratings. It features a wide input range of 3V-60V and a selectable, programmable soft start. A selectable, adjustable frequency PWM oscillator provides added flexibility, as well as a selectable current-limit threshold. The MIC2182BM uses a feedback voltage of 0.6V with an external voltage reference to maintain a regulated output. The device is protected with overtemperature and undervoltage lockout. The MIC2182BM is offered in the TQFN package and is ideal for multiple-output applications where efficiency and overall board area are important factors.

The device integrates all of the primary functions necessary to build a switching regulator power supply. In a buck converter, the MIC2182BM receives an input voltage that is regulated to a desired level at the output. It monitors a feedback voltage and adjusts the output voltage using two pulse width modulation (PWM) signals, one of which determines the duty cycle of the load switch and the other the synchronous switch of the buck converter. The voltage reference determines the output voltage, while the current limit control limits the output current.

The MIC2182BM also integrates a slew rate control circuitry to limit the inrush current, a thermally safe overtemperature protection, and an undervoltage lockout. All of these features combine to form a complete, cost-effective switching regulator solution with improved overall system efficiency.
