The MIC2198BML is a high performance, dc-dc synchronous step-down switching controller designed to provide high efficiency and power savings in a wide variety of microprocessor-based applications. It features an on-chip synchronous rectifier driver, Internal PWM generator and on-time timer, and a power-on-reset (POR) pin to simplify microprocessor system design. Additionally, the MIC2198BML incorporates a current-mode PWM control scheme to provide reliable and accurate transient response, low output noise and an extended temperature range for improved system robustness and performance.

The MIC2198BML is capable of driving a wide variety of buck converter topologies, including synchronous rectified and non-rectified topologies, such as the popular SEPIC, Cuk, and quasi-resonant boost converters. As the MIC2198BML has a PWM frequency of up to 500 kHz, it is well suited for DC-DC applications that require high frequency operation. Additionally, the MIC2198BML can be used in single-port and dual-port operation for redundant systems, or for applications that require two outputs.

The MIC2198BML, together with an external MOSFET and small number of external components, forms the basis of the basic non-rectified buck switching regulator. The PWM signal generated by the MIC2198BML is applied to the gate of the external MOSFET. When the gate voltage exceeds the threshold voltage of the MOSFET, charge carriers will flow from the source to the drain, instantly forming a conducting path between the input and output of the converter. This current conduction will cause major voltage drops across the MOSFET’s RDSON resistance, which is a function of the gate-source voltage and the drain-source current. Through a loop compensation network, the output voltage of the converter is effectively regulated.

The voltage regulation loop implemented by the MIC2198BML is a fixed frequency, peak current mode feedback control loop. The current feedback signal applied to the inverting input of the error amplifier is generated by the on-chip current sensing transistor connected between the output and the FB pin. The loop also includes a compensation network, formed of external resistive and capacitive elements that can be tailored to achieve the desired output voltage response for the system.

The MIC2198BML, with its extended set of features, high speed operation, wide operating temperature range and ultra-low operating current, is well suited to meet the challenging demands of today’s portable systems.
