The MIC38C42AYM is a highly integrated, high efficiency AC-DC converter with synchronous rectification, and off-line switcher from Microchip Technology Company. It is designed to operate in many industrial and consumer applications such as network power supplies, telecommunication equipment, and other computer systems.

The MIC38C42AYM is a wide input voltage range integrated power supply switch which is designed for step-down applications. It provides high efficiency and good thermal performance. It is completely integrated system with single-stage AC-DC power architecture utilizing proprietary power MOSFET and control ICs.

The high-side power switching is based on a high-voltage start, synchronous rectification, and dual-mode weak-current control scheme to reduce stand-by power in the no-load condition. The input AC voltage is PFC pre-regulated before it is fed to the synchronous rectification stage, where it is switched to DC voltage. The switching frequency is internally fixed at 100KHz, allowing very small external components. Output voltage can be precisely regulated to any value from 0.5V to 12V. It is capable of up to 1.5A output current from a single output. The device supports over-voltage protection, temperature shutdown, adjustable hysteric response and enhanced soft start.

The device supports a comprehensive array of protections. OVP (over voltage protection) feature can be programmed at given thresholds for both positive and negative voltages. Shutdown function becomes active if the junction temperature exceeds its thermal limit. The device is also equipped with adjustable hysteric response feature to minimize the number of times the OVP is latched. Enhanced Soft start minimizes the in-rush current while starting.

The MIC38C42AYM features very good EMI performance and works with most system level EMI requirements. The onboard anti-muting circuitry is provided to avoid EMI sound pressure level (SPL). With the built-in transient protection, an analog feedback loop, good load and line regulation, the MIC38C42AYM can supply the system with clean and regulated DC voltage to meet the requirements of modern industrial and consumer applications.
