Power management integrated circuits (PMICs) play an important role in the operation and control of integrated circuits in electronics.As part of the power management system,PMICs include power transducers, power converters, timing components, voltage monitors and other components.Gate drivers are one type of PMICs and are used to drive power transistor gates to control the flow of power down paths in an electronic system.The MIC4452BN is an example of a gate driver PMIC.This article will discuss the application fields and working principles of the MIC4452BN.

Application Field

The MIC4452BN is a high current level shifter for driving n-channel enhancement mode MOSFETs and IGBTs.It is designed for bidirectional level shifting from 1.5V to 4.1V and is able to drive up to 80A pulsed or 20A continuous output current.It can also be used for logic level shifting for applications such as setting up logic voltage levels for separate logic grounds.In addition,this device is ideal for dc/dc converter boost circuit control,where changes in supply voltage are anticipated,such as in automotive applications.The MIC4452BN is available in Lead-free (RoHS-compliant), SOIC-8 package.

Working Principle

The MIC4452BN consists of two input channels and one output channel.Each input channel consists of a pair of N-type MOSFETs,where one MOSFET is the low-side switch and the other MOSFET is the high-side switch.The sense resistor is connected in series with the low-side switch and is used for current sensing.The output channel consists of an N-type MOSFET and an integrated high-side current limiter.During normal operation,when the enable (EN) pin is low,the enable circuit is turned off and the low-side MOSFETs in each input channel are turned on.The voltage at the output of each input channel is determined by the voltage at the motor terminal.The high-side MOSFETs are turned on by the outputs of the internal logic gates and the current in the switches is monitored by the sense resistor.The current limiter in the output channel limits the peak current and is active when the enable pin is high.

If the enable pin is high,the enable circuit is turned on and the voltage at the output of the enable circuit is applied to the gate of the output MOSFET,driving it to its on state (fully conducting).When the enable pin is low,the output MOSFET is held off.The MIC4452BN also has an adjustable dead time between the low-side and high-side MOSFETs of its input channels,which eliminates cross conduction and reduces power dissipation.The MIC4452BN also features a soft-start circuit which helps to minimize inrush current.The current limit function reduces power dissipation in the device,protecting it from overheating.
