The MIC49500-0.9WU TR is a low dropout linear voltage regulator integrated circuit (IC) manufactured by Micrel Semiconductor Inc. This device is a monolithically integrated, three-terminal, low dropout, low quiescent current voltage regulator ideal for portable applications powered from single-cell Li-Ion or alkaline cell batteries. The MIC49500-0.9WU TR is designed to provide a low-dropout voltage between 570mV and 1.3V, with an accuracy of ±0.9%. The output current is up to 250mA and the maximum operating temperature range is from -40 to 125°C. This device is available in surface mount packages, such as TO-220-5PU, TO-220-6PU and TO-263-5PU. The MIC49500-0.9WU TR features a small footprint, low-profile surface mount packages, and is designed to consume minimal power. The MIC49500 monitors the battery voltage and provides a low-dropout voltage, allowing the battery to be used for as long as possible. The quiescent current for the device is typically 40 μA, which helps reduce power consumption.The MIC49500-0.9WU TR offers excellent regulation of output voltage from a wide variety of inputs (including lighting and dropped input). Its Output voltage is easily adjustable via an external resistor. This device also has built-in protection against Over Temperature, ESD and short circuit.The working principle of the MIC49500-0.9WU TR is based on a voltage reference circuit with an internal error amplifier and a series pass transistor. The error amplifier compares an internal 1.25V (typical) voltage reference with the voltage present at the feedback pin. When the voltage on the feedback pin is higher than the 1.25V reference voltage, the error amplifier decreases its output current. Conversely, when the voltage on the feedback pin is lower than the 1.25V reference, the error amplifier increases its output current. This action of the error amplifier controls the current through the pass transistor and provides a regulated output voltage at the fixed voltage set point.The MIC49500-0.9WU TR is ideal for a variety of applications such as cell phones, PDAs, notebook and tablet PCs, industrial and consumer applications, , data collection and monitoring applications, battery-backed systems and other portable applications. It can also be used for loads that require a regulated supply voltage that is not too close to the battery voltage, such as power amplifiers, voltage controlled oscillators, and other analog signals.
