The MM5Z27V is a semiconductor diode designed to operate as a Zener diode. The device allows current to flow in the forward direction, yet blocks current in the reverse direction. In the forward direction, current is limited only by the dynamic resistance of the device. In reverse direction, the voltage applied to the device is limited to the Zener voltage of the device. The MM5Z27V has a Zener voltage rating of 27V.
The principle of operation of the MM5Z27V diode is based on the fact that a current can flow through a diode even if a reverse voltage is applied. This current flow is caused by a process known as avalanche breakdown. When a reverse voltage is applied to the MM5Z27V device, electrons in the junction region undergo acceleration and gain enough kinetic energy to break the covalent bonds of the semiconductor material. This process causes the anode and cathode to become momentarily connected, resulting in the Zener effect.
Due to its positive conduction characteristics, the MM5Z27V diode is primarily employed in a variety of applications in the industrial and commercial sectors.
