Working Principle

The MMA8205EGR2 utilizes a capacitive transducer (CTS) as its sensing element. CTS is a five-port system that utilizes a source orator port, two receiver ports, and two impedances. The device works by measuring changes in capacitance that occur when acceleration is applied. An electric drive current, I, is generated on the source port. This current travels through the two receiver ports, producing modulated capacitance C1 and C2. The capacitances C1 and C2 are captured in a comparator circuit, providing an output indication of a detected acceleration. The device senses acceleration in both the X- and Y-axes, and is calibrated using a Zero-Point voltage.

The output of the MMA8205EGR2 is an analog voltage proportionate to the acceleration measured. The device also has embedded protection against physical shock, with accelerations up to 8G. The device features a low-power operation mode which increases the devices stability and extends its battery life. The device is also capable of measuring acceleration over a wide frequency range, including low frequencies (5Hz to 95Hz).
