Motion sensors are devices used to detect the physical movement and acceleration of an object. Accelerometers are particular types of motion sensors that measure linear acceleration along one or more axes. This type of sensor is widely utilized in various applications ranging from measuring vehicle acceleration, to providing protection against a wide array of hazards. One such accelerometer is the MMA8205EGR2, a two-axis accelerometer manufactured by NXP Semiconductors. This device is used in many applications due to its small form factor, low power consumption, and ease of use.
Application FieldsMMA8205EGR2 is being used in many different application fields. Not only does it measure accelerations, but it also provides robust protection from physical shocks while also allowing for precise acceleration measurement. The device is used mainly in automotive, consumer and industrial applications. The automotive application areas include automobile airbag deployment, anti-lock braking systems, car-end instrumentation, electronic suspension control, and parasitic drag control. Consumer applications include HVAC, portable medical equipment, recreational equipment, security, and surveillance systems. Industrial applications include various motors, machine control, pumps, gears, and winches.
Working PrincipleThe MMA8205EGR2 utilizes a capacitive transducer (CTS) as its sensing element. CTS is a five-port system that utilizes a source orator port, two receiver ports, and two impedances. The device works by measuring changes in capacitance that occur when acceleration is applied. An electric drive current, I, is generated on the source port. This current travels through the two receiver ports, producing modulated capacitance C1 and C2. The capacitances C1 and C2 are captured in a comparator circuit, providing an output indication of a detected acceleration. The device senses acceleration in both the X- and Y-axes, and is calibrated using a Zero-Point voltage.
The output of the MMA8205EGR2 is an analog voltage proportionate to the acceleration measured. The device also has embedded protection against physical shock, with accelerations up to 8G. The device features a low-power operation mode which increases the devices stability and extends its battery life. The device is also capable of measuring acceleration over a wide frequency range, including low frequencies (5Hz to 95Hz). Additionally, the device offers an adjustable low pass filter as well as a temperature compensation feature which ensures accurate readings across a wide range of temperatures.
The MMA8205EGR2 is a two-axis, low power acceleration sensor with an impressive range of features. Its small form factor, robust protection, and low power consumption make it an ideal choice for many different applications. The device is used for measuring both linear and angular acceleration along two axes, over a wide frequency range. Its built-in protection and temperature compensation features enable it to measure acceleration accurately across a wide range of temperatures and shock levels. Furthermore, the device’s adjustable low pass filter enables it to accurately measure applications ranging from automobile shock absorption to consumer motion sensors.
