The MOC3031SDM is a 6-pin device optimized for AC switching applications such as phase-control dimming, motor control and switching power supplies. It includes an internal photo-sensitive MOSFET, which is electrically isolated from the gate output part of the optoisolator. The device is categorized as one of the optoisolators which have a triac or SCR output.

The optoisolator works by using light-emitting diode to transfer the electrical signal from the input (control circuit) to the output (load circuit). The electrical insulation between the two circuits is achieved by optical couplings. In the MOC3031SDM, the traffic light emitting diode (LED) is used to transfer the signal from the control circuit to the load circuit, which has a maximum capacitance of 400pF. The signal travels from the LED to the integrated photo-sensitive MOSFET which is capable of withstanding blocking voltages up to 600V.

The working principle of this device is, as the LEDs on the input side emits light, it is received an optocoupler, which is an integral part of the device. This optocoupler, contains a light-sensitive MOSFET, which is electrically isolated from the output section. When the LED is turned on, the MOSFET is turned on as well, and this voltage is applied to the gate of a power MOSFET or IGBT, which is connected to the load. This in turn allows the current to pass and thus switching the device.

The MOC3031SDM has wide application field in industrial and commercial applications. It is widely used for the phase-control dimming of lighting loads in areas such as facilities, offices and stores.
