The MOC3032SM is an optoisolator that forms part of the Optoisolators - Triac, SCR Output family. It is built by Optek Technology Inc, and is a 6-Pin DIP that has Zero-Cross Phototriac Output Optocouplers.

An optoisolator is a device which uses light to transfer an electric signal between two isolated circuits. This isolates the input from the output, meaning it is completely cut off from it. This prevents electric shock, and also prevents noise from interfering with the signal. Optoisolators are used in various applications which require level shifting, signal transmission, and the protection of sensitive circuits against noise.

The MOC3032SM features a 6-pin DIP package with a cULus recognized 6-Pin DIP. The isolation voltage is 4200 VAC and the CTR is typically 15-50%. It features an full, open-collector output, meaning that the load must be supplied from a separate source. This is achieved by having a high voltage transistor, in parallel with the LED, and having the LED output provided to the gate of the transistor.

The main application field of the MOC3032SM is in motor control, lighting products and phase control solutions. It requires a relatively low input current to trigger, only requiring 1mA of DC current. It is also suitable for circuits that may have high input voltages, up to 30V DC.

The working principle is fairly simple. It uses the LEDs in the optocoupler to transmit light from the input to the output. When a current is sourced in the forward direction, the LEDs will fire and therefore be transmitting the signal. The transmission of light to the output side causes the scattering of electrons in the junction, which switches on the output side, thus transmitting the signal.
