Optoisolators are a type of semiconductor component which uses an emitting element and a photovoltaic detector optically isolated from each other on an integrated circuit. The MOC3051SR2M is an optoisolator which has a Triac Output. This optoisolator is designed for use in Logic-output applications. It is a bidirectional, photocoupler consisting of an infrared emitting diode and an integrated Silicon control rectifier (SCR) output detector.

The MOC3051SR2M optoisolator is ideal for suppression of surges in industrial environments, allowing for a built-in low-leakage SCR Output for robust and reliable operation in heavy electrical conditions. It is designed to meet Level V Qualification and UL77 Recogonized requirements for creepage and clearance distance. This optoisolator has a compact SSOP-8 Surface-Mount Package, measuring 8.0mm x 4.4mm. The SCR Output is capable of sinking and sourcing peak currents up to 200mA for higher power applications.

The MOC3051SR2M operates between 4.5-20V with a typical turn-on voltage of 8V at 250mA. The optoisolator has a minimum and maximum off-state dv/dt of 500V/µs and 10V/µs, respectively. Its minimum and maximum off-state leakage current at 25°C is a low of 5mA and a high of 20mA. The zero-crossing time of the optoisolator is 85ns typical.

The primary application of the MOC3051SR2M is to serve as an interface between a low-level Logic circuit and higher-power loads such as motors, heaters, contactors, and LEDs. This is done by controlling the SCR Output of the optoisolator with a transformer-coupled circuit. The MOC3051SR2M optoisolator can also be used in microcontroller-based applications, allowing for direct control of the SCR Output. In addition, the optoisolator can be used to interface between I/O modules in distributed control systems.

The working principle of the MOC3051SR2M optoisolator is based on the photoeffect of light on an SCR circuit. The infrared LED emits light which is then converted into electrical signal when it strikes the integrated SCR Output. The voltage of the SCR output is an amplified version of the signal sent to it from the LED. This electrical signal acts as a switch which is triggered by light, resulting in the SCR switching on or off. This switching action is then used to control the higher-power loads connected to the optoisolator.

The MOC3051SR2M optoisolator is designed to provide increased isolation between high-power and low-power circuits. Its low creepage and clearance distance ensure robust operation in challenging industrial environments. This optoisolator’s features and small size make it an ideal choice for protection in applications that require a high level of safety.
