The MOC3072TVM is an optoisolator device that falls into the group of devices known as a Triac, SCR (Thyristor Controlled Rectifier) Output. It is built in a six-pin DIP (Dual In-line Package) enclosure and it essentially operates as an electrically isolated switch, allowing control of larger electrical loads without the need for direct connection to a control system.

The MOC3072TVM contains a single-channel optocoupler, a random phase opto-triac, and a zero-crossing detector. The optocoupler is composed of an infrared light- emitting diode (LED) optically coupled with a phototransistor. The optoelement is optically isolated from the analog inputs such that electrical isolation is preserved even when powered from the same source as the control system. The zero-crossing detector of the MOC3072TVM (TTL-based, +4mA/−0.6mA) supports input from logic devices operating at up to +14V.

The opto-triac is optically isolated from the outputs, and it is designed to control AC loads up to 20mA at 256V. It is a bidirectional device (it opens and closes without having to change the polarity of the input) and it has extremely low switching power when triggered, resulting in faster response times than other types of optoisolator devices. Also, the noise immunity is considerably higher than in other optoisolators due to its built-in power supply rejection.

The MOC3072TVM is primarily used in applications where a control system needs to be electrically isolated from a higher voltage and/or higher power device, such as in high-voltage lighting controls, motor speed controllers, and the like. In the switching circuit, the MOC3072TVM is used in conjunction with a relay, triac, or SCR controlling a higher voltage or current than the control system can handle, for complete electrical isolation between the two.

The MOC3072TVM works by utilizing the principle of optoelectricity whereby light energy is converted to electrical energy. At the input end of the device, an electrical signal is applied which causes an LED to emit light, and this light is sensed by a photodiode on the output side of the device. This electrical signal, when combined with an appropriate trigger, is used to switch the output triac, allowing the higher voltage and/or current to be controlled by the lower voltage and current of the control system.

The MOC3072TVM is an extremely efficient and reliable device that is suitable for a wide range of applications. Its built-in isolation and high noise immunity make it an ideal choice for any application where the need to control higher voltages or currents is of paramount importance.
