The MPC5746R-176DS evaluation board is a complex embedded multiprocessor designed for use in a wide range of applications, particularly for powering up embedded systems requiring higher performance. The board comes with two 32-bit ARM Cortex-R4 cores, four 64-bit PowerPC e5500 cores, an MPC5715 dual-core digital signal processor, two Freescale® ECSPI modules, different memory configurations along with a number of integrated peripherals, digital I/O, SPI, CAN, UART, I2C, JTAG, programmable logic, a 5V power supply, and more.
The board, which is part of the MPC57xx series of microprocessors from NXP, is designed to meet the needs of applications that require fast process processing, deterministic real-time performance, and low-power consumption. With the numerous integrated peripheral controllers, MPC5746R-176DS is designed as a flexible solution for complex embedded applications with high processing needs; ranging from applications in industrial control, in-vehicle infotainment, automotive, and medical systems to industrial motor control.
The primary function of the MPC5746R-176DS is to execute the application code or instructions that are stored in its internal memory. It performs this task by sending signals from the CPU (central processing unit) to the peripheral units (e.g. peripheral registers, or memory). Basically, the board acts as a conduit between the CPU and the various peripherals. That is, it allows the CPU to access and read/write information from/to the various peripherals. The primary purpose of the board is to act as a platform in which the software code can be executed.
At the core of the MPC5746R-176DS is the NXP e200z6x ARM Cortex-R4 processor which offers a wide range of features such as: powerful instruction set, fast clock rates (up to 120MHz), low power consumption, and the ability to support very high-performance real time computing applications. This core runs at a maximum frequency of 120MHz and supports both 32 and 64-bit instructions. In addition, the e200z6x processor can be run in either single or multicore configuration. The multi-core configuration allows the user to add additional cores for more performance.
The board also includes four Freescale PowerPC e5500 cores running at up to 800 MHz which can be configured to run in both single and parallel configurations. Additionally, the board is equipped with an impressive NXP MPC5715 6-core digital signal processor (DSP). The DSP can be configured to operate in single, dual, or six-core mode and it is capable of running up to 800MHz. This makes the board suitable for developers looking to tackle complex applications with multiple signal types and processing requirements.
The board is also equipped with an extensive set of integrated peripherals ranging from analog I/O, digital I/O, SPI, CAN, UART, I2C, JTAG, programmable logic, a 5V power supply, and more. It is also equipped with 512KB of internal flash memory which can be used to hold program code, data, or configuration settings. Additionally, the board supports 1GB of high-speed DDR3 RAM and up to 64GB of external memory.
In addition to the many integrated features of the MPC5746R-176DS, the board is also equipped with an LCD display which is connected to the board via a USB port. The LCD display can be used to display graphics, text, and other visual information related to the software or application code being executed by the embedded system.
