Pressure Sensors, Transducers are an integral part of many applications that rely on the detection of physical pressure to measure or control processes. One such pressure device is the MPX4105A which is an absolute pressure sensor capable of measuring pressure ranges from 0 to 100 kPa. This device is capable of supplying both an analog and digital output.
The MPX4105A is built upon a tried and tested pressure sensor, the MPXV5004. This device contains a Piezoresistive pressure sensing element which is enclosed within a discreet ceramic package. This ceramic package acts to protect the internal components from external damage. Furthermore, the ceramic package also helps to provide the pressure sensor with superior accuracy and temperature stability.
Because of its unique design, the MPX4105A is well suited for use in wide ranging applications. These applications can range from the automotive sector, for monitoring air intake systems, to industrial applications, such as measuring liquid flow in pipelines and tanks. In addition to this, the device is also ideal for use as a remote pressure sensing element within medical, aviation and many other sectors.
In terms of its working principle, the MPX4105A is based on the Wheatstone bridge theory. This theory states that when the four resistors, within the Wheatstone bridge, are of identical value, then balanced conditions exist. A voltage is applied between the two outer resistors and the voltage output is measured at the midpoint of the two center resistors. In the case of the MPX4105A, the two outer resistors are of known constant value, whilst the two center resistors are pressure sensitive elements. As such, when the device is used to measure pressure, the voltage is read at the midpoint of the two center resistors.
The key advantages of this device lie in its extremely high accuracy and low operating temperature range. The accuracy of the MPX4105A is 0.5% over the range of 0-100kPa, making the device ideally suitable for applications such as fuel systems, where potential leaking is a serious issue. Furthermore, the device has an operating temperature ranging from -40°C to +125°C ensuring the device can be used across a wide range of temperatures with very little change in accuracy.
