The MSMLJ17A/TR is a sensitive gate, unidirectional TVS diode. This diode is designed to protect sensitive electronic components from voltage transients induced by lightning and other transient voltage events. TVS diode, also known as transient voltage suppressor diode, is a four layer semiconductor device that acts as a voltage clamp to protect other sensitive electronic components from potentially damaging overvoltage events. It is not only used in lightning protection, but also other electrical applications, such as in the automotive industry to protect electrical components from voltage spikes and surges, protection of solar panels etc.

The MSMLJ17A/TR is a 400W Transient Voltage Suppressor diode designed to protect sensitive electronic components, such as computer chips, from voltage transients induced by lightning, ESD (electrostatic discharge), and other pulse-type overvoltage events. The diode is capable of clamped voltages between 12-17 volts, and can sustain a peak pulse power up to 400 watts. The TVS diode also has an ESD protection rating of 15kV.

The internal structure of the MSMLJ17A/TR is made up of a series-connected, four layer PNPN diode structure. This structure consists of two “parasitic” parallel connected diodes which provide the clamping action, and a pair of avalanche diodes which act as a shunt device and provide a low impedance path for high currents in the event of a surge or transient event.
