TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes, commonly referred to as "transient suppressors", are electrical components used to protect circuits from electrostatic discharge and other surge-related problems. The MXLUPT8, a unipolar MOFSET transistor (VFT) with reverse-biased breakdown for transactional voltage overshoot protection, primarily serves the purpose of a TVS.
The MXLUPT8 is able to protect all types of electronic circuits from damage inflicted by transient voltage. This is done by diverting the over-voltage pulses away from valuable circuitry to ground. Furthermore, if exposed to power inductive loads, these diodes will also provide continuous drain/source voltage protection.

The avalanche breakdown voltage is typically defined as the point at which the device experiences a breakdown current greater than 1mA. This level of current depends on the size and type of the device; the MXLUPT8, for instance, has a breakdown current of over 2mA.
The working principle of the MXLUPT8 lies in its avalanche breakdown voltage. The breakdown voltage is purposely designed to be higher than the expected normal operating levels of the circuits it is meant to protect. In the event of a transient voltage spike, the avalanche breakdown voltage of the device quickly reduces the voltage across the terminals. This helps to keep the circuit safe from damage and ensures a secure and reliable working environment.
Besides providing protection from transients, the MXLUPT8 also provides normal mode and continuous drain/source protection. Normal mode protection is otherwise known as “clamping”, wherein the device redirects fast electrostatic discharges and other overvoltage pulses to ground. The continuous drain/source protection, on the other hand, is designed to protect the device against dynamic power inductive load transients.
In summary, the MXLUPT8 is an excellent choice for overshoot protection due to its low cost, high avalanche breakdown voltage, and low conduction current. It is highly reliable and efficient in its protection against transient voltage and provides normal mode and continuous drain/source protection.
