The working principle of MXLUPTB8 is as follows: the diode works in accordance with the avalanche breakdown principle, which is the process of forming an avalanche of minority carriers after a voltage is applied above the breakdown voltage of a diode in the reverse direction. When the avalanche breakdown voltage is exceeded, a large amount of electrons or ions are released, resulting in exponential current amplifying phenomena. The product is designed to break down in a tightly controlled manner to minimise stress to the protected circuit, and automatically reset itself afterwards.
In the TVS diode, the breakdown voltage of the p-n junction is set so that a very low current is able to develop through the diode in a forward direction. Under normal conditions, the diode will remain in the low current off-state. However, if a high voltage is applied to the device, in the reverse direction, the breakdown voltage will be exceeded. This will initiate the avalanche breakdown process, resulting in a significant increase in the reverse current of the diode until its limits are reached. When the diode reaches its current limit, it will switch off until the voltage returns to its normal value, afterwards the diode will switch back on.
