NCP5612MUTBG is a versatile high-performance LED driver developed by ON Semiconductor. It provides a variety of protection functions, dimming control and fault detection functions, making it widely used in automotive, industrial and consumer fields. NCP5612MUTBG is mainly used to power a single string of LEDs, its output current up to 1000mA with 4MHz peak current control; supports 4 independent current channels or a string of LEDs with up to 72V input voltage, it works in 6V ~ 72V current environment; as for the resolution and accuracy, its 64-step dimming resolution with ±2% accuracy has reached the same level as many current constant drivers. At the same time, it also has the capability to detect an open-LED and it will shut down the the faulty LED in the string when detected. And it also supports programmable fault algorithm with 4 types of fault detection and it has maximum 3 fault status output.
In the automotive area, this LED driver has already been widely used as the headlight driving module. For example, the recent VW new generation Arteon headlights are widely used NCP5612MUTBG LED driver, supporting two LED strings with up to 1000 mA LED current output, with high voltage safety protection device, monitoring temperature and short-circuit protections, to perfectly meet safety and long time use requirement. Other than that, it can also be used in automotive tail lights and other automotive lighting applications.
In the industrial area, NCP5612MUTBG can be used for smart display backlight application, for example, it can perfectly meet brightness adjustment requirement, which is suitable for projectors, LCD and other big screen backlight. It can also be used in other industrial application, like LED backlight, LED matrix displayers and LED strip LED lights.

Working principle
Using synchronous rectification technology, NCP5612MUTBG’s maximum switching frequency up to 4MHz, supporting 0.7V to 5.5V external reference voltage, thus providing 0-1000mA maximum output current. It uses analog dimming and PWM dimming, plus its 64-step diming resolution with ±2 last accuracy, making it easier to adjust and control the brightness of the LED.
The other features mentioned above about NCP5612MUTBG’s application fields, like open-LED detection, temperature protection and other protections, are all from its build-in protections. It uses a two-channel comparator circuit with hysteresis to detect the LED current accuracy. If the LED current exceeds the threshold value, the output current will be adjusted in order to maintain the LED current accuracy. At the same time, it also build-in a temperature protection circuit, when the temperature of the module is above the pre-set temperature, the output current and switching frequency will be decreased in order to prevent the module from being damaged due to overheating.
