The NCP81146 Gate Driver is a single chip controller IC specifically designed for automotive buck converter applications. It is part of a family of gate driver ICs designed for a wide range of buck converters operating from high-voltage battery up to 600V. This advanced device is packed with features including adjustable fast transient response control and fault detection capability. The NCP81146 is designed to drive ultra-fast gate switching speeds with gate rise/fall times as low as 10ns.The NCP81146 also features programmable over-current protection with fast current fold-back, over-voltage protection, short-circuit protection, non-latched or pulse-by-pulse over current protection, and configurable gate driver topologies. The NCP81146 has a single-cycle digital control loop and configurable gain with selectable maximum operating frequency. Furthermore, it integrates a wide range of digital logic control capabilities, including an adjustable voltage level threshold on any digital input, adjustable dead-time control and adjustable pulse-by-pulse current limit.The NCP81146 is part of the NCP811xx family of gate drivers, which are all optimized for automotive buck converter applications. These next generation gate drivers offer improved performance, lower total system cost, lower power consumption and higher efficiency. The NCP81146 is also backward compatible with older gate drivers, allowing for an easy upgrade path.The working principle of the NCP81146 is relatively simple. It is designed to provide efficient bidirectional control of a buck converter\'s output voltage. It does this by driving the gate pins of the Power FETs to maintain a steady output voltage across the buck converter\'s output terminals. The NCP81146 receives input from an external voltage sense line, which is used to calculate the difference between input and output voltage. If the output voltage is not equal to the setpoint, the NCP81146 will adjust the duty cycle of the switching output signals to ensure that the output voltage is stabilized.The NCP81146 can also be used as a fault detection device, which monitors the status of the Power FETs and detects any overloads and short-circuit conditions. The NCP81146 is capable of driving both high and low side Mosfets and detecting any mis-operation within the power circuit. It can also provide an active fault signal for a given fault condition, allowing for system shutdown or alerting the user of an issue.The application field of the NCP81146 gate driver is broad and can be used in many different automotive buck converter applications. The NCP81146 is ideally suited for 12V, 42V and 48V automotive applications, as well as various industrial and consumer buck converters.
