NCV2931AST-5.0T3 Voltage Regulator and Working Principle
NCV2931AST-5.0T3 voltage regulator is a positive voltage regulator IC designed for various low-power electronic systems, such as automotive electronic control units (ECUs), aboard, industrial, consumer electronics and so on. With 5.0V fixed output voltage and 5 Amp output, this IC is mainly used for the application field of power management, voltage control and signal conditioners. This voltage regulator IC consists of two major components, an internal voltage reference and an error amplifier. The voltage reference is integrated on-chip and is used as a reference voltage for the error amplifier that sets the output voltage. The operation of the NCV2931AST-5.0T3 voltage regulator involves four stages, such as input voltage protection, voltage regulation, current regulation, and output voltage protection. The on-chip voltage reference voltage ensures that the output voltage is equal to the reference voltage. At the first stage, the input voltage is applied to R3, which is a voltage divider, resulting in a voltage drop across RL that is proportional to the input voltage. This voltage drop is compared with the reference voltage of the device and an error signal is generated. At the second stage, the error signal is amplified by the error amplifier. The output of the error amplifier is changed to a gate voltage of an internal P-channel MOSFET. When the error signal is high, the gate voltage of the internal MOSFET is low and the output voltage drops. When the error signal is low, the gate voltage of the internal MOSFET is high and the output voltage is increased. At the third stage, the current regulator monitors the output voltage. If the output current exceeds the value of the current limit, the voltage drop across the current limit resistor increases and the output voltage is reduced.The fourth stage is the output voltage protection. If the output voltage is exceeded, the output voltage is limited to prevent any damage. The output limitation is activated when the output voltage is greater than the specified maximum output voltage.
