NCV5661MN30T2G Application Field and Working Principle

As a PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear device, the NCV5661MN30T2G is a monolithic low dropout (LDO) linear regulator. This device provides adjustable output voltage for applications that require very low quiescent current and precise output voltage. Constructed using the latest BCD+ (Bi-CMOS, plus Merged NPN technology), the NCV5661MN30T2G device is designed to provide Zener regulated output voltage with a very low dropout voltage at any load current up to the maximum specified current. It offers excellent accuracy, line and load regulation and very low noise performance.

Typical applications which require low quiescent current, high accuracy, and low dropout performance such as automotive accessory control, automotive ECUs, board level power supply, auxiliary power supplies, battery backup power supplies, baseband power supplies, and voltage isolation circuits.

NCV5661MN30T2G Working Principle

The NCV5661MN30T2G is an advanced, low-dropout voltage regulator. It features a PNP-emitter follower pass transistor (T1) and two error amplifiers (EA1 and EA2). The two error amplifiers control the pass transistor to regulate the output voltage. The voltage at the non-inverting input of EA1 (VEA1) is higher than the voltage at the non-inverting input of EA2 (VEA2) as set by a shunt-type voltage divider consisting of resistors RE1 and RE2.

The non-inverting input of EA1 is connected to the output voltage (VOUT) while the non-inverting input of EA2 is connected to a Zener reference voltage, typically 3V. Thus VEA1 is higher than VEA2. The first error amplifier (EA1) is used as an error amplifier, while the second error amplifier (EA2) acts as a Zener-regulated action amplifier. The pass transistor is driven by the output of EA1. The higher the output voltage of EA1, the lower the voltage on the base of the pass transistor, thus reducing the current through the pass transistor.

The regulated output voltage is set by the resistance ratio of the voltage divider connected to the non-inverting input of EA2. This put together results in a classic low-dropout voltage regulator scheme, where the reference voltage (VREF) is set by the resistance fraction of the divider and the error amplifier(s) control the voltage dropout of the regulator at any load current.
